ABOUT ME
Hi everyone! My name is Mary Simon and I am currently a Senior at Michigan State University. I am studying Elementary Education with a focus in Language Arts. I grew up in the small town of Stanton, Michigan which is about an hour north of Lansing. In May, I will graduate from MSU and begin my internship year of student teaching in the Lansing area.
Throughout my childhood the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was asked many times and from the time I was a young girl I always replied; "I want to be a teacher." My mother taught in a kindergarten class and watching her teach inspired me to follow in her footsteps and have my very own classroom one day. As a child, I would spend countless hours playing “school” in which I would recruit my sister, my stuffed animals, and my dolls to be my “students”. I would spend hours making lesson plans, grading tests, and instructing my imaginary class. Now that I am older and have taken the necessary steps to becoming an educator, I am still just as enthusiastic, if not more, to hold the position I have always dreamed of having.
John F. Podojil once stated “Teaching is not a profession; it’s a passion. Without a passion for your subject and a desire for your students to learn and be the best in the world, then we have failed as a teacher and failure is not an option.” When reading this quote, I reflect on the many teachers that have inspired me throughout my education. Inspired me not only to be a better person but to do better academically as well. It is my hope that I will someday have the opportunity to touch the heart of a child in the ways that so many of my teachers have touched mine.
